Old Road
cobble road

This picture was taken by myself in Alexandria Virginia. Alexandria Virginia is home to one of the oldest roads in the area. This is a cobble stone road on Princess Ave in Alexandria. It was made during the 1800s. Back then there was no use for GPS. Roads were simple and easy to follow. Now with the more modern roads, people look to GPS's to help guide them through the congested cities and backcrountries of today.

GPS's were originally designed by the Department of Defence and Ivan Getting. The Global Positioning System is a satellite navigational system, predominantly designed for navigation. GPS were originally used by the Department of Defense to help pinpoint submarine on the ocean. In 1993, the US Air Force launched a satellite into orbit, completing a network of 24 satellites known as the Global Positioning System. This enabled people with GPS recievers to learn you location on the planet within a few hundred feet.
