I am performing a research study on the speech of native speakers of Japanese, early bilingual speakers of Japanese (people who grew up speaking Japanese and English in the household), and late language learners of Japanese (those who learned Japanese after puberty). There are certain sounds that occur in Japanese that are not present in the English. I am investigating whether there is any variation among speakers for these sounds based on how and when they learned Japanese.
In this current study, prior to the task, participants will be interviewed to determine if they meet the project requirements (e.g., age) and what kind of speaker of Japanese they are. They will then answer a questionnaire about their language background, and during the study’s task will listen to audio recordings and be asked to repeat the sentence they had just heard.
