Computer security is a field that involves the interest and work towards solving the risks and dangers involved with computer operation and use. Ideally, one could go to extreme measures in favor of building and maintaining a completely secure system. However, the time and money spent in doing so would be unreasonable and unwanted by most people. According Eugene H. Spafford, the director of Purdue’s Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance Security, “The only truly secure system is one that is powered off, cast in a block of concrete and sealed in a lead-lined room with armed guards – and even then I have my doubts (“Computer Security”).” While some might distress at this notion of insecurity, one should not completely fear for their computer security. Fortunately, the United States government has established certain laws and acts in an attempt to protect computer security and reduce the risk involved.
