When video conferencing technology first came out, David M. Fetter (1996) says “it is typically an expensive undertaking involving costly equipment, high user fees and elaborate infrastructure often including a dedicating videoconferencing room” (23). The technology for video conferencing was available in the 70’s but it was expensive to transmit and the frame rate for the picture was low. It was only during the 1990s that video conferencing software ceased to be an expensive utility and became available to average consumers for a minimal fee. Soon after, software like Yahoo Messenger, Skype, Msn Messenger became the main competitors in the video conferencing industry.
