Coach Bob Smith
Bob Smith
Position: Offensive Coordinator
Eleventh season: Millersville University

Coach Smith joined the George Mason University Football staff in 2004 as the Assistant Offensive Line Coach. After one year of service he moved to the other side of the ball as the Recruiting Coordinator/Defensive Line Coach. In 2007 Coach Smith assumed the responsibilities of Assistant Defensive Coordinator in addition to the Defensive Line. Currently, he is serving as the Associate Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator. During his tenure at George Mason, Coach Smith has been a part of two Seaboard Conference Championships and a National Club Football Association’s (NCFA) Mid-Atlantic Conference Championship. He has also guided two players to All Conference Honors.

Prior to arriving at George Mason, Coach Smith taught Social Studies at McDonough High School. He started his coaching career in 1999 as an Assistant Varsity Coach/ JV Defensive Coordinator for the McDonough Rams. In 2000, he was promoted to the Assistant Varsity Coach/JV Head Coaching position. From 2001 to 2003, Coach Smith taught Social Studies and Physical Education at John Hanson Middle School. During this time he served as the scouting coordinator for the McDonough Rams football team.


Coach Kenyon Spann
Kenyon Spann
Position: Defensive Backs
Eighth season: George Mason University

Eighth year coach, Kenyon Spann, brings a talented past and a history as one of Mason’s finest to the coaching staff. A 2001 graduate of George Mason, Spann earned multiple honors and had great success while playing for Joe Pascale.

Spann was one of 95 players that came to GMU in an effort to help elevate the program in 1997 to Division 1AA status. He played at Mason all four years. While at Mason Spann was the team Captain from 1999 – 2001. Earned Seaboard Conference Defensive player of the year in 01. During his playing career, Spann started in all 39 games with 86 tackles, four interceptions and 2 touchdowns. He also received the coaches Achievement and Senior Award in 2001.


Coach Virgil Seay
Virgil Seay
Position: Wide Receivers & Film Exchange
Seventh season: Troy State University

Virgil played football, basketball and ran track for the Moultrie High School Packers. He graduated from Moultrie HS in 1976 and went to East Mississippi JC in Scooba, Mississippi. At EMJC, he played two seasons of football then transferred to Troy State University in 1978. After completing his college football career at Troy, Virgil was then drafted in 1980 by the Denver Broncos of the National Football League. He did not make the team. The following year Virgil signed a contract to play with the Washington Redskins. He went on to play four years and in 2 Super Bowls while with the Redskins. Virgil went back to Troy after his first season in the NFL to finish his degree and graduated from Troy State University in 1982 with a degree in Social and Rehabilitation Services. Virgil met Renee (Burroughs) in 1978 at Troy and they were married in 1984. Renee and Virgil have two children Meghan and Zoie. They live in Fairfax County, Virginia.


Coach Billy Ray Davis Jr.
Billy Ray Davis, JR
Position: QB/RB Coach
Sixth season: UCLA

In his sixth season with the staff, Coach Davis has made the switch to the offensive side of the ball, serving as the Offensive Coordinator and coaching Quarterbacks and Running Backs. During his first season with the team he was the Linebackers Coach. Coach Davis played his collegiate ball in the California JUCO system at Ventura Community College in Ventura, California and later transferred as a walk-on at UCLA under Coach Donahue.
As a player, he played strong side and middle linebacker with the Ventura Pirates. And gained some valuable experience as a Fullback with the Bruins. Coach Davis has coached at the youth and high school level, including the Singapore American International School in Singapore from 2006-09. Coach Davis is a retired, 26 year veteran of the United States Navy, and looks forward to continuing his coaching and teaching careers at George Mason and Northern Virginia Community College.
