David Lieu is currently a junior at George Mason University and is majoring in both Biology and Chemistry with a concentration in Biochemistry. He is in a number of student organizations like Alpha Lambda Delta the National Freshmen Honor Society where he held officer positions as Vice President of Operations and Historian. He is also a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta the Pre-Medical Honor Society and the Pre-Pharmacy Club. David is the co-founder and President of the GMU Chemistry Club since 2006 with over 80 members joining in the last year. The GMU Chemistry Club has run many fund-raising events; university sponsored events, as well as educational programs with local elementary schools. He is also an American Chemical Society Student Affiliate. In the past two year he has also been appointed to the George Mason University College of Sciences Student Advisory Council, representing the Chemistry Department, which meets with a number of university deans to discuss issues about the college from the student’s point of view.

David Lieu received his Advance Studies Diploma from Herndon High School in 2005 along with Governor of Virginia Seal for Academic Excellence, Board of Education Seal for Career and Technical Education, Board of Education Seal for Excellence in Civics Education, and the Advanced Placement Program Seal. As well as being part of the National Latin Honor Society and receiving the Herndon High School Orchestra Director’s Award in 2005. He has won numerous awards while at George Mason University. These include George Mason University Vision Award for Academic Excellence 2006 , two George Mason University Center for Teaching Excellence Research Apprenticeships 2007, George Mason University Research Innovations Award for Originality and Creativity 2007 as well as the George Mason University’s Research Innovations Student’s Choice Award 2007. Along with four Teo-Chew Association’s Academic Scholarships 2004-2007 and received one of ten National Alpha Lambda Delta Jo Anne J. Trow Undergraduate Scholarship nationwide.

David Lieu is currently working for the Chemistry Department at George Mason Unviersity as a chemistry tutor and testing monitor at the College of Science Testing and Tutoring Center along with running the GMU Chemistry Club. He has done research with Dr. Robin Couch performing biochemistry research with the fungal metabolite, cyathin A3, of the fungus Cyathus helena which has been shown to promote the production of nerve growth factors to help prevent or slow neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease. Possibilities include a fast acting battle field drugs that can preserve neural function with soldiers suffering from server head trauma or injuries until they can be provided with proper medical treatment. He is currently doing research with Dr. Gregory Foster in environmental chemistry working on soot carbon analysis in fluvial sediment focusing on the Anacostia and correlating it with PAHs and PCBs therefore producing a more accurate pollutant indicator for rivers, lakes and bay areas. Many of these compounds found in fluvial sediment contain soluble molecules like benzo[a]pyrene which act as carcinogens. If enough of these compounds are take into the bodies or come in contact with the skin, they have been shown to cause numerous types of cancers by binding to our DNA and not allowing certain parts of our DNA to be transcribed.
