I am in my 3rd year at George Mason University pursuing a BS in Biology and BS in Chemistry conc. Biochemistry.
I did reserach out at the George Mason's PW campus under Dr. Robin Couch the newest member of the Chemsitry and Biochemistry Department. I worked with the fungi Cyathus helena trying to produce a secondary metabolite called cyathin which is thought to promote the production of nerve growth factor and also act as an antibiotic. This may in the future help prevent or slow the rate of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or Huntington's Disease.
I am currently doing research with Dr. Gregory Foster in environmental chemistry working on soot carbon analysis in fluvial sediment focusing on the Anacostia and correlating it with PAHs and PCBs therefore producing a more accurate pollutant indicator for rivers, lakes and bay areas. Many of these compounds found in fluvial sediment contain soluble molecules like benzo[a]pyrene which act as carcinogens. If enough of these compounds are take into the bodies or come in contact with the skin, they have been shown to cause numerous types of cancers by binding to our DNA and not allowing certain parts of our DNA to be transcribed.
I am also a chemistry tutor at George Mason Chemistry Tutoring Center. Dont come in and expect us to do your homework for you, you lazy bums!! =P
On a more personal note i like explodeing monkeys, sharks with laser beams, and radioactive peguins!!! o yeah and my fiancee Sarah. WEDDING PLANNED MAY 23rd 2009! ^_^
