Things to do to ensure calm and not panic:
- read about the details "Short
Speech Sequence" here
and in the Student Handbook
- remember that the first 4 speeches
are not graded (except participation)
- remember that they are all only
60-90 seconds in length
- remember that you can take notes up
with you, and even read from your script
- remember our classroom is a safe
and supportive place to practice and improve
Guidelines & Ground Rules for
Short Speech #2 (the STATISTIC):
Prepare your speech
- find a STATISTIC or FACT you
have reason to believe will be appreciated by your classmates
- remember, always focus on your
audience - what will they enjoy and appreciate?
- note the source of the statistic
(not the URL but the author and, if appropriate, the book or play it is taken
from)
- decide what you wish to say about
the statistic (e.g., what does it mean, why is it important, useful, or
interesting, what lesson can the audience draw from it?)
- organize the information in the
most effective way (you can start with the statistic or build up to it)
- type it up (I recommend double
space and use typeface at least 14-point for easy reading)
- underline your 'Central Idea'
sentence
- you must hand in your speech notes
at the end of class
Practice your speech
- good speakers practice their
speeches a minimum of 10 times (it's only 60-90 seconds)
- practice allows you see what
'works' and what doesn't in your script/organization
- be sure to time your delivery (no
shorter than 60 second and no longer than 90 seconds)
- change your organization or
re-write your script for maximum effect
- repeat (practice and rewrite until
it's how you want it)
Deliver your speech
- for Short Speech 2, do NOT write
out a complete script
- write out the quote and use key
words to outline your other points
- I'll remind the class before we
start about the other ground rules (scanning the audience and making eye
contact, etc.).
