This page contains links to legal reference tools on the WWW. These tools are best utilized if you have a general idea of where the information resides. For example you must know whether to you are interested in US Supreme Court cases, Federal Appeals Court Cases, or State Supreme Courts Cases, etc.

 

To Find Supreme Court Cases:

FindLaw: This search engine allows you to search for Supreme Court Cases by citation, party name, or full text search:

For citation searches, enter the US Reporter cite.

For Party name searches: enter the name of one of the parties. For this type of search enter the party with the most unique name in order to reduce the number of documents you get back.

Use the full text search if you do not have a cite or party name. Use this feature just as you would any search engine. For example if you want cases dealing with sexual harassment , enter "sexual harassment."

To Find Federal Circuit Court Cases:

Emory Law Library Federal Courts Finder: This site contains links to the Federal Circuit Courts. The amount of information available varies with the Circuit Court. You must go to the individual Circuit Courts to search for cases.

Directions: On the map, double-click on the circuit you wish to search. Once you reach the homepage of the circuit court, scroll down to the page until you find the case search feature. Double-click on the case search feature and follow the directions included on the page for searching. If you don't find a "case search" button try the "opinion" or "opinion archive"button.

To Find Federal District Court Cases:

FindLaw: Federal District Courts: This site is an index of the Federal District Courts. Not all Federal District Courts are available. You must go to the individual District Courts to search for cases. Not all District Courts will give you the ability to search their sites.

Directions: When you have reached the FindLaw Federal District Court Page scroll down the page until you see the header "Federal District Courts." You'll see an alphabetical listing of states and the states with available links to the Federal District Courts are in blue. Once you've reached the District Court homepage, look for the case search feature and begin your search. If you can't find the "case search" button, look for the "opinion" or "opinion archive" button.

To Find State Cases and Codes:

WWW Virtual Law Library: State Governments: This site is an index of State Government Servers. The amount of information varies with the state. You must got to the individual state server to begin your search. Not all State sites will give you the ability to search.

Directions: When you are at this page click on the first letter of the state's name. There will be a list of available sites for that state. For example, if you want Florida Supreme Court Cases hit "F" for Florida and double click on Florida Supreme Court. It will take you to the Florida Supreme Court homepage.

To Find Law Journals:

WWW Virtual Law Library:Law Journals: This site is an index of the law journals available on the WWW. Not all Journals may be available. You must go to the individual law journal before you can begin your search.

Directions: When you are at this page click on the first letter of the school's name. For example, if you want the Cornell Law Review, click on "C" for Cornell and look for the Cornell Law Review link. Double click and it will take you to the Cornell Law Review to begin your search. Once you are at the Law Review site look for the search archive feature.
