- 1980: Ernst Dickmanns builds first robotic cars to use saccadic vision and Kalman filters
- 1987-1995: $1 billion spent on the Prometheus project, largest Robot car project in Europe

1990s
- 1994: Robotic cars are developed with vision able to track 12 cars at the same time; this technology was called VaMP
- 1995: Robotic cars are able to steer without human input, except gas and brake

2000s
- 2005: the DARPA Challenge was created. Teams from the US would build autonomous cars to test their driving ability
- 2006: European Land Robot challenge was created fro European teams; robots went off-road and traveled long distances using gps
