Pre-1980


  • 1961-1979: Stanford cart created by James L. Adams for research project; later it became a NASA Robot
  • 1977: Japan's Mechanical Engineering team builds a car that went 50 m

1980s


  • 1980: Ernst Dickmanns builds first robotic cars to use saccadic vision and Kalman filters
  • 1987-1995: $1 billion spent on the Prometheus project, largest Robot car project in Europe

1990s


  • 1994: Robotic cars are developed with vision able to track 12 cars at the same time; this technology was called VaMP
  • 1995: Robotic cars are able to steer without human input, except gas and brake

2000s


  • 2005: the DARPA Challenge was created. Teams from the US would build autonomous cars to test their driving ability
  • 2006: European Land Robot challenge was created fro European teams; robots went off-road and traveled long distances using gps
