GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM

Current GPS Technology

The Global Positioning System (GPS) has enabled users around the world to develop hundreds of applications affecting nearly every aspects of modern life. Advantages of GPS application

Time

According to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum website, each of the GPS satellite has an atomic clock which provide accurate time to the GPS receivers. GPS receivers synchronizes the signals to determine the accurate time to within 100 billionths of a second.

Roads and Highways

The availability and accuracy of the Global Positioning System (GPS) increased efficiencies and safety for the transportation system. GPS provides alternative routes which will significantly reduce daily traffic jams. It also provides a safe and quick route for the public safety team to reach their destination in a timely manner in case of an emergency

Aviation

GPS offers satellite navigation services for aviators. GPS technology provides reliable information for airspace traffic. It is very important that aviators receive accurate position and location information. The development of GPS technology increases safety and reduced aircraft delays.

Marine

GPS technology provides an efficiency navigation method for mariners. It determines the position and the location of their destination. As stated by the Coordination Office: "Accurate position, speed, and direction are needed to ensure the vessels arrive at its destination in the most economical and timely fashion that conditions will permit." The GPS technology replaces the traditional compass and also improves navigation technique for the mariners.

Public Safety and Disaster Relief

GPS played a significant role in relief efforts for global disasters. Providing the location of emergency services and disaster relief team reduces the time of their search which could save lives.
