Conclusion

Major General PopeThere should be a way to balance the growing demands of modern society, with the need to preserve our nations past. Growth in cities and towns is on the rise, without any signs of decline. In Virginia alone, the population of Northern Virginia has increased significantly since the 2000 census.

Perhaps there should be a set amount of land set aside for each landmark and battlefield. If enough of a land buffer on all sides were accounted for, than when the need to build comes, there is still a sizeable park for people to enjoy and learn about the past. Determining which battlefields are saved, and how much land is allotted, could be determined by the significance of the event. For example, the battles at Manassas were quite large and involved large amounts of troops from all areas. Accordingly, the park is fairly large and well protected. For smaller battles, perhaps some land could be set-aside around a monument commemorating the events of the battle and actions of the soldiers, as has been done at Ball’s Bluff and Ox Hill.

In all, there should be a balance and as much community agreement as possible. Working together, important historic land can be saved for many future generations to learn from and enjoy.
