Course Objectives
This course is a sequel to Elementary Chinese I.  It will emphasize communicative activities and stress the learning of both receptive and productive skills.  Students are expected, by the end of the semester, to be able to communicate fluently in Chinese in some basic socially interactive situations such as making an appointment, shopping, and talking about weather, etc.  To achieve such a goal, students need to learn Hanyu Pinyin system well, to become modestly proficient in using approximately 400 words, to know how to use the basic grammatical structures, and to learn how to read and write approximately 200 characters.

Course Requirements
Students’ own work is the key to the success of this course. You are required to:

1. Preview and review the lessons before and after classes
2. Participate actively in class with the teacher and your classmates
3. Do the homework in the Workbook. You are expected to turn in the written assignments no later than the due date according to the session-by-session schedule. Late homework will be corrected, but penalized 50% of the possible score. You may find your homework answer sheet here.
4. Attend the class consistently and on time.  There will be no penalty for the first two missed classes.  After that, each absence will reduce your final grade by one percentage point.  (That is, twelve absences in one semester will result in a 10% point deduction from your final grade.  So even if you get perfect scores on all tests and homework, you will get a "B" for the course due to your absence).

5. Honor Code. The George Mason University Honor Code is in effect throughout the entire duration of the course and applies to all course work carried out inside and outside the classroom. It is the responsibility of each student to be familiar with the GMU Honor System and Code as laid out in the Student Handbook. Please refer to http://www.gmu.edu/mlstudents/handbook/honor.html for detailed information.

Quizzes
We will also have numerous simple pop-up quizzes in most of the other class meetings (i.e. non-chapter quizzes days). Students are allowed to drop 2 of the lowest grade, including the missing ones, of their pop-up quizzes.

Oral /Aural Tests
There will be two oral/aural tests. One test will be in the form of a presentation in class. The setting for the other test will be an individual meeting with the instructor. In that meeting, reading aloud, short recitation, and basic conversation will be tested.  More details will be given in class.

Final Written Exam
The written test will be a comprehensive test on your knowledge of characters, grammar, reading and writing skills.  More details will be given in class.
