New Century College incorporates nine areas of
competency to its learning program. The college chooses specific areas
of learning that need to be developed the most and focuses its teaching
on those areas. These areas are as follows: communication, valuing,
aesthetic awareness, global understanding, effective citizenship,
information technology, group interaction, critical thinking, and
strategic-problem solving. Throughout the course of the year, the
subjects that we study incorporate several of these competencies in one
task. By using some of these competencies together, I was able to
complete a group project and a discovery research assignment. In NCLC 110, I was placed in agroup to create a group presentation on Title IX. The first competency we used was strategic-problem solving. My group created a group contract. We identified possible problems and created a plan of action to deal with those problems. Once the contract was written, each member signed the contract, and in so doing, they agreed to the terms of the contract. The next competancy we used was group interaction. We divided up the tasks based on everyone's strengths and weaknesses. For example, Scholastica was given the task of putting the powerpoint together because she was good with technology and not so great at writing. Along with group interaction, we used communication. We all presented our ideas, and we negotiated by a group consensus. We chose as a group the ideas we felt were the best, and designed a powerpoint presentation. This feeds into the next competency we used which was information technology. We used the powerpoint program on microsoft to create our presentation. We also found a commercial on youtube that connected perfectly to the topic of our presentation. After all our hard work, we gave our presentation and received a B+ for our efforts. |
Similarly
in NCLC 130, I was able to use multiple competencies to write my
discovery research number 3 assignment. The first competency I used was
information technology. I used the library databases to collect
the data I needed for my research project. I was able to find newspaper articles and journals that related to my topic. The next two competencies I used
were critcal thinking and global understanding. First, I used my
critical thinking skils to connect ideas I learned in class to my
project, and then with my discovery of British imperialism, I became
more aware of the global connection of countries. Finally, I used
communication. I organized all the materials I had gathered into an
essay with a timeline and pictures incorporated in it. With the use of
these four competencies, I was able to complete my discovery research
assignment. By using multiple competencies together, I was able to complete the tasks I was given. In doing so, I achieved a greater understanding of those learning areas. I became more comfortable using the programs on my computer, and I was better able to apply concepts I learned in class to my homework. I became more effective at accomplishing the tasks I was given. I also became more comfortable expressing my ideas and communicating them to others. The integration of these competencies helps students accomplish their goals and achieve a greater understanding of them. |
