On the path towards a career
editing internship
I was a little nervous once I realized I am about to be a senior in the fall 2009 semester and had no internship on my resume. In my professional writing class, we were doing those lame ice breaker exercises with the people we sat next to, and we had to tell our usual info, like our name, year, major, and anything else we felt was necessary info. So, I started talking with the girl next to me and started telling her about me. Once I said out loud that I was going to be a senior next fall, she noticed my apprehension and asked what was the matter, and I responded telling her how I have no experience and before I know it, I will be thrown into the real working world. Lets just say it was history from there.
getting.the.experience.I.need
I.was really worried about not.getting.the.experience I know I need to graduate into the real world. With my brother graduating in May 2009, it hit me that I was next in just one year! I have thankfully become extremely lucky in getting this position at the Fairfax County Health Department's Disease Carrying Insects Program (DCIP). I thoroughly enjoy all those I work with, and I am already beginning to gain the real.world.experience.I.Need
I.am doing this internship for.credit to add more hours to my degree. It is just like a class, with the course number being English 498, with a syllabus, an article to read, five journal assignments, a minimum number of words I have to write myself, and by the end of the course, I must compile a portfolio to show my advisor. I will get a midterm.and.a.final grade too. While I'm there, I basically edit whatever I can get my hands on, whether it is technical or a publication that they need my opinions on. My supervisor Dr.Jorge.Arias has been wonderful in working with me thus far, and I know he will teach me many aspects of a working world I need to know that I can take with me to become a smarter.and.wiser.woman. I am looking forward to my summer that I will spend with the employees of DCIP, and I know I will learn a great deal.
