Reflection: EDEP 821 SocioCultural Processes in Learning & Motivation

Sociocultural processes in learning and motivation exposed me to the different methods researchers use to examine cultural and social aspects of education, learning, and motivation. In this class, we were required to read and present a chapter in a book called Big Theories Revisited. The editors of this book interviewed several developers of popular learning theories (e.g., Eccles, Wigfield, Winne, Zimmerman) and asked them to view and revise their theory through a sociocultural framework. We were given the option to choose which chapter we wanted to review and I picked a chapter that focused on the idea of co-regulation. Co-regulation suggests that motivation and self-regulation are interrelated and must be understood as byproducts of individuals’ culture and social context. This chapter as well as this class taught me that although I am interested in processes of motivation and self-regulation, I cannot ignore the social context that these processes operate under.

The ideas taught in this class aligned very nicely with the ideas taught in the Ways of Knowing class. The Ways of Knowing course exposed me to the social justice issues in education that I was blind to while the sociocultural class equipped me with the skills necessary to understand and tackle this topic. As a result of what I have learned in Ways of Knowing, I chose to integrate and apply my ideas from both classes into my final paper which was a research proposal. Specifically, I developed an  model to help me better organize my ideas for researching motivation/self-regulation in the context of stereotypes.
