- August 30, 2019 (12:14 PM)
- In class I mentioned an old professor of mine who used to be a magician.
Here is an article about him that refers to a card shuffling result (that it takes
7 shuffles to randomize a deck of cards) and also how he trained himself to flip a coin so that it'd come up the same way 10 times out of 10. And
here is a link to a related video (about flipping coins).
- August 6, 2019 (7:18 PM)
- In an effort to get way ahead in my preparations for the coming semester, I added more information to the
web page pertaining to the 1st midterm exam and the
web page pertaining to the 2nd midterm exam. Now, in addition to study guidelines, they includes descriptions of the exams I
plan to give you, lists of important problems to study, and links to similar exams from a previous offering of STAT 346. I also added some more info to the
web page pertaining to the final exam.
- August 1, 2019 (6:31 PM)
- I just finished modifying this web site, making it ready for the start of the 2019 Fall Semester.
I've made a lot of changes to this web site over the past 9 hours, and during that time the web site contained a mixture of content that was appropriate for the
2019 Summer Session and the 2019 Fall Semester.
So if you looked at this web site during that transition period, you should go back and look at it carefully now. In particular,
please take time to read the
syllabus rather
carefully.
I'll expect students to comply with all of the stated rules and
procedures.
- In the weeks to come I'll add homework problems and
make other modifications as appropriate. I encourage you to check this web site regularly (you can come to this announcements page to find out what modifications I make). This web site will be my main way of communicating with you outside of class.
(Note: Since a new edition of the text book recently came out, I had to change a lot of places on my web pages where I refer to specific page numbers and
specific problems or exercises in the book. I tried to do this carefully and not miss anything, but there may be a few places where I missed making the proper changes.
Please let me know if you discover any page numbers, or problem/exercise numbers, that seem to be incorrect!)
- I'll warn you up front that some students have found this course to be rather difficult.
I think most students who do poorly in this course are ones who start the
semester without having a good enough knowledge of calculus and/or ones who just don't
consistently put enough effort into the course throughout the entire semester.
If you start the course being sufficiently good at calculus and you put effort into learning the material week by week
(which includes attending the lectures and paying attention), you shouldn't find this course to be horribly difficult (provided that you put a decent effort into
doing each homework assignment).
- I went ahead and
posted the first portion of the first homework assignment. (A link
to it is on the
homework web page.) Slightly before or after the 2nd lecture, I'll add some more problems to HW 1 and
also post the first portion of HW 2. HW 1 is due at the time of the 3rd lecture (Sep. 12), although there is a brief grace period that ends at 11 PM that night.
