Images: the Basics

picture of keyboardWeb designers use photo editing programs such as Adobe Photoshop or Gimp to add images to their webpages. They can use filters to manipulate images to fit the design of the webpage. Common filters like distort or blur add variety in the visual aspects of the photos. Photos can be saved with ".gif" ".png" or ".jpg" file extensions.

Image Licensing

Not all images are free for use on the web; many photos are copyrighted by the owners or photographers. Some websites allow users to purchase the right to use and manipulate photos, but there are resources available that provide copyright-free photos. Websites like Flikr and Shutterstock allow users to search for photos by copyright and licensing to find photos that can be manipulated and displayed elsewhere on the web. Some photos are only available for noncommercial use, so businesses cannot use the images to promote themselves. Designers just need to be aware of the Creative Commons of the photos they are using.
