Mission

Our Mission

As a student organization, our goal is to provide students the education, resources and guidance needed to research, develop, and implement new technology.

Our Goals

We desire to develop and implement new technology for the benefit and well being of mankind by combining resources at GMU and in the community abroad, and by providing workshops, training, resources, and guidance to students. We also desire to develop an innovation lab for students.

At the completion of a successful model for an innovation center, we would like to foster the development of innovation centers at other schools.

SCI Development Phases

Phase I

Go through the entire design-to-market process with one or more low cost, marketable products to become a self supporting organization.

Phase II

Refine the integration and cooperative relationships of resources and various departments, organizations, and the community with the Students Center for Innovations.

Phase III

Provide opportunities for professionals to volunteer to guide and mentor students in research and development, design and patenting, and business and marketing.

Phase IV

Create an independent business entity to facilitate and sponsor the Students Center for Innovations.

Phase V

Create an innovation lab or facility for the Students Center for Innovations, which will be a place to give students an opportunity to work together in developing their technological and entrepreneurial ideas.

The success of SCI will be measured by the development and implementation of technology. Success begins with a vision, is maintained with focus, determination and diligence, and will be realized through the combined efforts of students, faculty, and the community.

As we continue through the phases of the development of SCI, we desire to hold to a high standard of ethics to maintain the integrity of the organization. Using the IEEE Code of Ethics as a guideline, we established a code of ethics to meet the needs of SCI.

SCI Code of Ethics

As participants of the Students Center for Innovations, we recognize the importance of our technologies affecting the quality of life throughout the world, and accept a personal obligation to our school, its members and the communities we serve, to commit ourselves to the highest ethical and professional conduct and agree to:

1. Accept responsibility in making decisions consistent with the safety, health and welfare of the public, and disclose promptly factors that might endanger the public or the environment.

2. Avoid real or perceived conflicts of interest whenever possible, and to disclose them to affected parties when they do exist.

3. Be honest and realistic in stating claims or estimates based on available data.

4. Reject bribery in all its forms.

5. Improve the understanding of technology, its appropriate application, and potential consequences.

6. Develop our technical competence and to undertake technological tasks for others only if qualified by training or experience, or after full disclosure of pertinent limitations.

7. Seek, accept, and offer honest criticism of technical work, to acknowledge and correct errors, and to credit properly the contributions of others.

8. Treat fairly all persons regardless of such factors as race, religion, gender, disability, age, or national origin.

9. Avoid injuring others, their property, reputation, or employment by false or malicious action.

10. Follow and abide by GMU regulations, local, national and international laws.

11. Share and develop ideas in good faith while properly documenting ideas and honoring and respecting their originators, and abiding by any intention or agreement of non-disclosure to protect those ideas and their originators.

12. Assist colleagues and co-workers in their professional development and to support them in following this code of ethics.
