Beginner's Guide to Web Authoring

Basic information on HTML, CSS, and more for the beginner web author.

Introduction to Web Authoring

The World Wide Web has become such an essential element in our everyday lives, it's easy to forget that there's at least one face behind every web page.
Have you ever wondered about the web layout of Google, or about the coding behind Facebook? Even if you haven't, the prominence and importance of web authoring can be seen easily in these two popular websites, which were made using a unique language of code.
Writing an essay and writing a website's code are very different procedures, but both can be taught and understood over time. This website is made for beginners interested in becoming web authors and learning the language of the digital age.
The content in the left navigation bar includes the Elements of User Experience--five elements from Jesse James Garrett's book of the same title. An overview of these elements will help you to consider the purpose of web authoring in terms of what a good website should do. Next, there are listed the basics of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), which are the foundations of web authoring and design. Because internet content relies heavily on visuals and on interactive links, a separate page is included for the use of images and hyperlinks. Finally, a resources page is included for additional help.
