Here's some tips on how to eat sushi:

  • Do not rub your chopsticks togethr. When not in use, lay them down parallel to your dish.
  • Do not use your chopsticks to take food off another person's dish with the end you put in your mouth. Instead, use the end you hold.
  • Don't put wasabi directly in your soy sauce, shoyu dish. Some sushi already come with wasabi in them.
  • Dip the neta, or fish part of the sushi into the shoyu dish, not the rice. The rice acts like a sponge and absorbs too much soy sauce.
  • You can eat Nigirizushi with your hands, but sashimi must be eaten with chopsticks.
  • Nigirizushi is meant to be eaten in one bite. Western-style sushi is hard to eat this way, but try your best.
  • Ginger is served with the sushi and is meant to be eaten between eating different sushi types to cleanse the palate. It's not meant to be eaten with the sushi.
  • It is polite to thank the itamae (or sushi chef). Try out some Japanese! Use phrases like: "domo arigato" (thank you) or "gochisosame deshita" (thank you for the meal).
