None of the materials below is "required". However, you will probably be more successful in the course if you read, study, and work problems from the textbook, attend class and take notes on the lecture Supplement, and work as many problems as necessary to help you understand organic chemistry. You may choose to use an earlier edition of the textbook; however, I will not attempt to provide you with a list of changes to the text. All references to the text in the syllabus are for the current edition.
The campus bookstore sells only the hard bound textbook. On the Wiley.com website, you can rent or buy the E-book. Be sure to buy the current edition (4th), which appears on the website below the earlier 3rd editon.
You can buy the bundled textbook and WileyPLUS through their website or through the Wiley link in Blackboard. You can also access a 14-day trial of WP on the website or through the class Bb link.
- Textbook (hard bound or enhanced E-book)
- "Organic Chemistry, 4th Ed.", 2021 David Klein. (There are answers to selected problems at the end of the textbook.)
- Student Study Guide and Solutions Manual, 4th Ed. (to accompany the text)
- The publisher says "a large number of solutions will be rewritten so that they more clearly illustrate the thought process necessary to arrive at the solution".
Wiley Course Resources (WileyPLUS)
WileyPLUS is an on-line learning platform that consists of the full Klein 4th edition textbook with a large number of practice problems, feedback, educational videos and guided learning experiences. You can find more information in the BlackBoard menu item "Wiley Course Resources". A 14-day free trial is available.
- Workbook
- "Organic
Chemistry as a Second Language, 5th Ed.", D. R. Klein [ or any previous edition]. This is an excellent workbook, but it is very similar to some of the content in our textbook by the same author. It is not sufficient to study this workbook only.
- Lecture Supplement
- "313 Chemistry
Supplement" [available on Blackboard].
-
- Molecular Models
- Any brand -- new or used [choose one set] - good values on the internet and the bookstore carries a good, inexpensive set (here are some possibilities).
-
- Scantrons
- Four scantrons, one for each exam. You must use the scantron version that is shown in the linked graphic.
-
- Periodic Table
Copies
of exams from a previous semester are available on BlackBoard. Exams this semester will be identical in format and similar in content to those.
In the library are textbooks from which
you can supplement your reading and problems. Other chemistry resources
are available on the Internet accessed through my Web site.
