Assignment 1

A. Windows

1. Capturing Windows
Click on this link to open a window. [If you have a pop-up blocker that is active in your browser, turn it off or allow the pop-up.] Keep the pop-up as the active window and capture the pop-up window and contents as a screen graphic. Using a graphics program such as Paint (easiest), save the file as a bitmap with the file name window.bmp.

After you download and install the ChemSketch freeware, open the program. Every time the program opens, an advertisement pop-up window opens on top of the open program, urging you to buy it. Leave the pop-up window open, and capture the contents of the entire monitor screen. (The ChemSketch window should not be maximized.) Using a graphics program such as Paint, save the file in the jpeg format with the name program.jpg.

Open Windows Explorer (file manager -- not to be confused with Internet Explorer, the web browser) to occupy about half the monitor screen. Set to Folders View. Set the file view to to show file extensions. Display the full path in the Address bar. Click on a folder that has files contained in it. Capture the active Explorer window. Save the file in the gif format as folder.gif.

Save all the image files to your flash drive in a new Folder named Images.

B. E-Mail

2. Creating a signature file
Open Notepad or other text editor. Choose Format from the menu bar. Make sure that “Word wrap” is checked. If not, click on it (the menu window will immediately close).

Compose a signature to incorporate in messages you send from the GMU Messenger Express or other e-mail client. Save your signature file as signature.txt. (It is not necessary to actually type the file extension .txt . Notepad will automatically add the file extension when it saves the file. Make sure that the extension .txt does not repeat, as in signature.txt.txt.)

3. I will send you e-mail with a Word document file attached. (It is not necessary that you know much about Word for this assignment -- Word documents are better than text documents for this exercise.) Read the e-mail message and follow the instructions. Open the attachment (or save it first and open it later). You will be e-mailing back to me the amended file -- not the one I sent you. Make sure you incorporate your new signature in the reply message.

C. Browsers

These are some simple tasks -- but pay attention to them because you will be using them repeatedly during the semester. Begin at the Chemistry Department website:http://www.gmu.edu/departments/chemistry/

4. Copying text from a web page
You can use any browser here. Open Notepad. Choose Format from the menu bar. Make sure that Word wrap is checked. If not, click on it (the menu window will immediately close).

Click on “Undergraduate Programs” in the left pane of the web site. Highlight all the text that corresponds to the undergraduate chemistry/biochemistry programs. Copy the selection. There is more than one way to copy in Windows. Choose whatever method you like – better yet, use a different method than you normally use. Paste the selection into Notepad. (Links and graphics will not paste in the text-only Notepad.) Save the text file as chem-XXX.txt where XXX are your initials. Enter Page Setup. Set to print 1" margins all around, your name in the Header (right-justified) and the file name in the Footer (left-justified) and the page number in the Footer (centered). Print the file.

5. Saving an image from a web page
You can use any browser here. Place the cursor over one of the ACS symbols in the “Undergraduate Programs” page. Right-click the mouse. (What happens if you left-click on the symbol?) Choose Save Image As… (Netscape or Firefox) or Save Picture As… (IE) (Or you can choose View Image to see the image only in a new page in Netscape.) Accept the file name as it appears in the dialog box. Choose the location to save the file in the Save in dialog box.

Use both Netscape and Internet Explorer (IE) for all remaining parts of section C.

6. Saving a web page
Click the “Overview” hyperlink on the Chemistry Department website. In Netscape/Firefox, save the complete page, accepting the default file name and extension. Look in the location where you saved the file. There should be a file and a folder containing numerous other files. In IE, save the page as a text file accepting the default file name and extension.

7. Downloading a file from a web page
At the bottom of the “Overview” page, click on the link “driving directions”. Right-click on the sentence “Click here for a downloadable, printable file…”. (What happens if you left-click on the link?) In Netscape/Firefox, from the pop-up menu, choose Save Link As… Accept the default file name and extension. In IE, from the pop-up menu, choose Save Target As… Accept the default file name and extension. Since both browsers are downloading the same file, the file name is necessarily identical. You only need to save the downloaded file once.

8. Printing from a web page
Set the print page preferences in both browsers to 1-inch margins all around, Portrait orientation. In Netscape/Firefox, at the center of the header, set to print the Window Title; at the center of the footer, set to print the URL. There should be nothing printed anywhere else in either the header or the footer. In I.E., set to print the same information, except the header and footer should both be right-justified. (This is a bit tricky to set up with I.E.; look for Help.)

Click on "Schedule" in the menu on the CHEM 350 website. Left-click the mouse anywhere in the Schedule frame. In Netscape/Firefox, right-click in the Schedule frame, then choose This Frame | Open Frame in New Tab. Select the new tab page. Then choose File | Print…. Print both pages.

Repeat with IE. Choose File | Print Preview, and then choose to print “Only the selected frame”. Print both pages.

Summary

  • Turn in a flash drive containing these files: window.bmp; program.jpg; folder.gif; the ACS image file (all in the Image folder); signature.txt; chem-XXX.txt file; the Overview web page files saved from both Netscape/Firefox and IE; the driving directions file; answers.doc. (Please note the flash drive requirements on the main Assignment page.)
  • Make sure there are no other files on the drive other than those you are assigned to turn in and that all files are correctly named.
  • Your flash drive should be permanently labeled with your first and last names, printed legibly in dark letters on a light background.
  • You will be sending an e-mail as a reply with an attachment.
  • Turn in the printouts, stapled in the order they appear in the assignment. Remember to add the required information such as your name, etc.
  • Please check that you have followed these directions exactly as they are written. Any questions -- please ask!
