A telemedicine effort in China could be quite successful in helping to reach Millennium Development Goal #6. China would be able to benefit from this endeavor more so than other East Asian countries. Policies and training need to be implemented, guidance must given to those carrying out the initiative, and the appropriate technology must be researched and piloted before it is deployed. The major players that can assist China are the ITU and WHO.
Telemedicine technology may also be able to contribute to the achievement of other Millennium Development Goals, such as reducing child mortality and improving maternal health.
Given our global history, there will most certainly continue to be outbreaks of deadly diseases in the future. However, an existing telemedicine backbone already in place will most likely facilitate greater training, prevention, and treatment for these diseases.
