The
final assistive technology course in my PhD program was EDSE 649 Advanced
Clinical Psycho Educational Assessment. This course raised my awareness
of many aspects surrounding assistive technology. From learning how to evaluate
toys as to their usefulness with helping students with special needs
develop skills, access knowledge and provide a gateway to their environments;
to considering prerequisite
skills needed before one can utilize technology and other objects; to
investigating assessment packages created by others such as Stages
by Madalaine Pugliese, to spending two months exploring the needs of a relatively
young man who had lost the ability to communicate easily and to use his limbs
to complete simple daily activities in developing a comprehensive
assessment of his strengths, needs, and possible solutions were a few
of the learning experiences which provided opportunities to become more
enlightened about the many aspects of assessment for assistive technology.
As Madalaine Pugliese pointed out,
“Alternate assessment is not an event, it is a journey!"
