Setting Up Your Laptop to Automatically Grab an IP Address (DHCP) under
Windows 2000



To change your network settings...
  1. Click on START > SETTINGS >CONTROL PANEL.

  2. Double-click on the "Network" icon.

  3. RIGHT-click on LOCAL AREA CONNECTION PROPERTIES>PROPERTIES.

  4. Click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and then click on the "Properties" button.

  5. Click on the option button for "Obtain IP address automatically."

  6. Click on the option button for "Obtain DNS Server address automatically."

  7. Click on the "OK" button on the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" window.

  8. Click on the "OK" button on the "Local Area Connection Properties" window.

  9. Re-start the computer.


To manually grab an IP address…

  1. Click on START>RUN.

  2. Type cmd in the text box and click on the "OK" button.

  3. Type ipconfig /release after the "C:\>" prompt and press the "ENTER" key.

  4. Type ipconfig /renew and press the "ENTER" key.

  5. Type ipconfig /all and press the "ENTER" key.
NOTE: If you have grabbed an IP address successfully you will see it displayed on your screen. If you see zero's or a number beginning with "169" then you have not successfully grabbed an IP address. There may be a problem with the jack, your network cable or your network card.
