Using Robinson, Rm. A111    

Before class...

Step 1:  Unlock the outside door to the room by entering your code into the Omni lock.  (When you close the door, it will lock automatically.)

1.  Press the “Clr” button on the Omni lock panel.

2.  Enter your code.

3.  Press the “Clr” button again.

A green light on the panel will flash.

4.  Immediately turn the doorknob and pull open the door.

Step 2:  Turn on the lights.

1.  Press the top of the “DOWNLIGHTS” switch on the wall (on your RIGHT as you walk in the door) to turn “ON” the incandescent lights (if they are not already “ON”).

2.  Walk down the stairs and behind the Instructor Console.

3.  Look at the control switches for the lights behind you to your LEFT on the wall.

4.  Make sure that the “DOWNLIGHTS” switch on the FAR RIGHT is all the way up.  (This switch also controls the incandescent lights in the room--along with the one in the back of the room.)

CAUTION: It is important that this switch remains “UP” even after you leave the room so the lights can be controlled from the switch at the back of the room when the next class enters.

5.  Flip the black switch and the white switch next it to the “ON” position (they control the incandescent lights above the projection screen).

6.  Flip the two white switches on the FAR LEFT to the “ON” position (they control the florescent lights in the room).

Step 3:  Adjust the projection screen.

Step 4:  Turn on the video projector (if it is not already “ON”).

1.  Press “SET UP MENU” on the Touch Panel Main menu.

NOTE: If the equipment is “ON” when you arrive and the Touch Panel is blank, press it to “WAKE IT UP.”

2.  Press “ON” under “PROJECTOR POWER” on the next screen.

3.  Press “MAIN MENU” to return to the Touch Panel Main menu.

NOTE:The projector will display video from the computers, VCR, or laser disk player.


During class...

To use the PC…

1.  Adjust the height of the keyboard rest by pressing the release lever to the LEFT of the keyboard and pushing the keyboard rest up or down.

3.  Turn the knob on the QUS switch box (located on the shelf underneath the monitor) to "A" for "PC."

4. Press the "CTRL" "ALT" and "DEL" keys at the same time in the window that says "Please log on as a Faculty or Staff member"...

NOTE:  The Logon Information box will appear.

5.  Click in the text box after the “User name:” prompt and enter your user name (the same user name you use to log on to the MASON computer system to check your E-mail).

6.  Press the “TAB” key.

7.  Enter your password and click on the [OK] button.

NOTE 1:  If you do not know your password, call x3-3456 to obtain it.  The telephone is next to the light switches.

NOTE 2:  To change your password, contact George Sokol (gsokol@gmu.edu).

NOTE 3:  If an "Error 53…" message appears on the screen, it means that you are connected to the back-up server. You should not notice any difference in the PC's performance.

To use the MAC...

1.  Fold down the keyboard rest by pushing it down towards you.

2.  Adjust the height of the keyboard rest by pressing the release lever to the LEFT of the keyboard and pushing the keyboard rest up or down.

3.  Press "MAC" on the Touch Panel.

To connect a laptop for audio, the Internet, and to display on the video projector…

1.  Connect your laptop's power cable to your laptop.

2.  Insert the power plug into the power strip (located on the shelf underneath the document camera).

3.  Connect the 15-pin VGA cable (located to the RIGHT of the monitor) into the "VIDEO OUT" connection on your laptop.   Often, the correct connection is the only one where it fits.

4.  Plug the network cable into the network card in your laptop (some laptops come with a special adapter that links the network card in your laptop to the network cable). (This cable is also located to the RIGHT of the monitor.)

5.  Plug the audio cable into the "AUDIO OUT" connection on your laptop.  (Often, this connection has a picture of headphones next to it.  Check your laptop's manual if you are not sure where it is located.)

6.  Turn the knob on the QUS switch box (located on the shelf underneath the monitor) to "B" for "LAPTOP."


To connect a laptop for audio, the Internet, and to display on the video projector (cont'd)…

7.  Press "PC" on the Touch Panel.

8.  After the main Windows screen appears on your laptop, check to see whether you can see the same screen displayed from the video projector. If not, then check your manual to see what key or combination of keys you need to press to display the screen on both the laptop and projection screen.

NOTE: Often, you must press the [Fn] key and one of the function keys once, twice, or even three times. Usually, this function key will be labeled "LCD/CRT" or have a picture of a monitor on it.

To play a VHS cassette tape...

1.  Insert a VHS cassette tape into the Sharp VCR (the second piece of equipment located in the RIGHT cabinet of the Instructor Console).

2.  Press “VCR” on the Touch Panel Main menu.

3.  Press “PLAY” on the VCR menu if the tape does not start automatically.

4.  Adjust the volume by pressing “VOL UP” or “VOL DOWN” on the VCR menu.

5.  Stop the tape by pressing “STOP” on the VCR menu.

6.  Rewind the tape by pressing “REWIND” on the VCR menu to rewind the tape.

7.  Remove the tape by pressing the “EJECT” button on the VCR.

8.  Press “MAIN MENU” to return to the Touch Panel Main menu.

To play a laser disk...

1.  Insert a laser disk into the Laser Disk Player (the fourth piece of equipment located in the Instructor Console’s RIGHT cabinet) by pressing the “OPEN/CLOSE” button on the Laser Disk Player, placing the disk on the holder, and pressing the “OPEN/CLOSE” button again.

2.  Press “LASER DISC” on the Touch Panel Main menu.

3.  Press “PLAY” on the “LASER DISC MENU.”

4.  Adjust the volume by pressing “VOL UP” and “VOL DOWN” on the Touch Panel.

5.  Press “STOP” on the Touch Panel to stop the laser disk from playing.

6.  Press the “OPEN/CLOSE” button on the Laser Disk Player to remove the laser disk.

7.  Press “MAIN MENU” on the “LASER DISC MENU” to return to the Touch Panel Main menu.


To use the Canon document camera to project pages in books, objects, or your handwritten notes…

1.  Press “DOCUMENT CAMERA” on the Touch Panel Main menu.

2.  Lift up the lamp arms so that one is to the RIGHT and the other is to the LEFT of the projection surface.

3.  Press the release lever next to the camera arm and bring the camera arm up so it is perpendicular with the projection surface.

4.  Flip the “POWER” switch on the LEFT side of the projection surface to the “ON” position.

5.  Press the  “LIGHTS” button on the lower RIGHT-hand corner below the projection surface to turn "ON" the two lights above.

6.  Place whatever you want to project on the projection surface.

Troubleshoot: If the image does not display, press the “FAR” button to enlarge the display (the last person to use the Canon Document Camera may have “zoomed in” for a slide).

7.  Press the "ZOOM" button “TELE" to bring the camera in closer or press the "WIDE" button to move the camera farther away (to the left of the "LAMP" button).

8.  Press the "NEAR" "FAR," or "AUTO FOCUS" buttons (to the left of the “ZOOM” buttons) to adjust the focus of whatever you want to display.

9.  Turn the "EXPOSURE" knob (to the left of the “FOCUS” buttons) until the image is as bright or as dark as you desire.

10.  Turn the "DETAIL" knob (to the left of the "EXPOSURE" knob) to adjust the picture quality.

11.  Press the "B/W" button if you are projecting black and white images (the indicator light will tell you whether or not this feature is active).

12.  Press the "NEGA" button if you want to reverse the image (the indicator light will tell you whether or not this feature is active).

To use the Canon document camera to project overhead transparencies or slides...

1.  Press “DOCUMENT CAMERA” on the Touch Panel Main menu.

2.  Lift up the lamp arms so that one is to the RIGHT and the other is to the LEFT of the projection surface.

3.  Press the release lever next to the camera arm and bring the camera arm up so it is perpendicular with the projection surface.

4.  Flip the “POWER” switch on the LEFT side of the projection surface to the “ON” position.

5.  Press the "BACK LIGHTS" button (in the lower RIGHT-hand corner below the projection surface) to turn "ON" the lights underneath the projection surface.

6.  Place the overhead transparency or slide that you want to project on the projection surface.


To use the document camera to project overhead transparencies or slides (cont'd)...

NOTE:Overhead transparencies should not be larger than 8 1/2” X 11” and the characters should have a point size of at least 18.  Also, limit the number of lines on a transparency to eight to make it easier for students to read.

7.  Press the "ZOOM" button “TELE" to bring the camera in closer or press the "WIDE" button to move the camera farther away (to the left of the "LAMP" button).

8.  Press the "NEAR" "FAR," or "AUTO FOCUS" buttons (to the left of the “ZOOM” buttons) to adjust the focus of whatever you want to display.

TROUBLESHOOT: If the image does not display, press the “FAR” button to enlarge the display (the last person to use the Canon Document Camera may have “zoomed in” for a slide).

9.  Turn the "EXPOSURE" knob (to the left of the “FOCUS” buttons) until the image is as bright or as dark as you desire.

10.  Turn the "DETAIL" knob (to the left of the "EXPOSURE" knob) to adjust the picture quality.

11.  Press the "B/W" button if you are projecting black and white images (the indicator light will tell you whether or not this feature is active).

12.  Press the "NEGA" button if you want to reverse the image (the indicator light will tell you whether or not this feature is active).


After class...

Step 1: Turn off the projector by pressing the “SET UP MENU” button on the Touch Panel Main menu and then pressing “OFF” under “PROJECTOR POWER.”

NOTE: Unless there is another class immediately following your class.

Step 2:  Exit the software running on the PC or MAC correctly (VERY IMPORTANT!!).

NOTE 1: Leave the computers "ON."

NOTE 2: If you are using the PC…

- click "START" to display the Start Menu

-   click on "SHUTDOWN" on the menu

  - click on "CLOSE ALL PROGRAMS AND LOG ON AS A DIFFERENT USER" in the "SHUTDOWN" window

-  click on "OK."

Step 3:  Remove any floppy disks, Zip disks, VHS tapes, CD ROMs, or laser disks from the equipment.

 
Step 4:  Leave lights "ON" so the next instructor will be able to get down the classroom stairs safely.

CAUTION: It is important that this switch remains “UP” even after you leave the room so the lights can be controlled from the switch at the back of the room when the next class enters.

Step 5:  Check to make sure the door WITHOUT the Omni lock is closed securely.

Step 6:  Close the door WITH the Omni lock securely.
