George Mason University and Stafford, Loudoun, and Frederick County Public Schools announced the opening of The Online Academy (TOA) in the fall of 2006. Soon afterwards, TOA received the Governor's COVITS award in recognition of its innovative use of technology to provide education to Virginia’s schoolchildren. TOA now offers students the opportunity to earn high school credit in a flexible, pedagogically sound virtual environment with the help of licensed Virginia teachers who understand online learning.
