CLASSROOM CODE OF CONDUCT
All college courses should be designed so as to facilitate learning. All those
associated with the college education need to do their part for this to happen. Students,
in particular, play a central role in creating an environment in which learning can occur.
This Code of Conduct will clarify basic expectations in order to avoid misunderstandings
of what is and is not appropriate.
- First, students should know and obey George Mason University's Honor Code. In
particular, students should not represent the work of other people as their own. If
you do not understand what this means, it is your resosibility to ask your instrutor to
clarify this matter.
- Second, students should attend regularly, arrive to class on time, stay through the full
period, and bring all necessary materials (books, paper, pen, minds, ...) to class.
- Third, students should come to class prepared, in particular, they should have finished
all the required readings for that day.
- Fourth, students should not engage in behavior that detracts from the learning
experience. Talking in class, sleeping, reading a newspaper or other outside works,
unnecessary movement in and out of the classroom--all distract others and limit your own
learning.
- Fifth, it is against University regulations to eat or use tobacco products in the
classroom. You may bring water or some other sealed beverage to class. You are responsible
for keeping the area around you clean and free of garbage.
- Sixth, because the classroom should be a place for the free discussion of ideas,
students should conduct and express themselves in a way that is respectful of all persons.
- Seventh, students are expected to take all tests at the scheduled times and turn in all
homework assignments in class at the time it is due. Unless an adequate excuse is
provided, grades will be marked down substantially for late work.
