In NCLC 110, we experienced four out of the nine competencies: communication, critical thinking, group interaction, and information technology. These four competencies were best experienced when we worked on the Higher Education Project. Professor Lecker gave my group the topic of affirmative action and diversity for the Higher Education Project. Using the communication competency, we had to talk among each other, in order to organize meetings, assign specific parts of the project, and make sure the project was together for the final presentation.
There were five people in my group, but many problems did arise when working together. In a group, people are responsible for their own work, but when other pe
ople don't complete their part of the project, the project starts to falter. Exploring the group interaction competency, we were each responsible for a set of slides and a speech, which pulled together into a presentation.

These slides included  specific topics about affirmative action and diversity, such as the Gratz v. University of Michigan case. For the final presentation, we had everyone in the group approve of the final product, and we made sure everyone was prepared. Organization is key when working with a group of people. In the end, we kept eye contact with each of our group members just to make sure the presentation flowed smoothly.
Another part of the project included researching. This explored the information technology competency. We learned how to explore the George Mason Library website, which provided us with a large variety of databases. Also, we went to the Johnson Center and Fenwick Libraries of George Mason University to look through different books on affirmative action. Using the information we researched, we also learned how to use Microsoft Powerpoint and Microsoft Excel. This helped with the presentation part of the project. With Microsoft Powerpoint, we created a visual aspect for our presentation. Microsoft Excel helped us create graphs that were used for specific parts of the visual aspect. Overall, this project gave us a better understanding of how to use technology.
