"BLOOD DIAMOND" the movie
Blood
Diamond was a tragic story for the many people in Africa and
third-world countries that are affected by globalization everyday. The
lack of resources is what holds all of the third-world countries in the
world back. Unlike China, the United States, Germany, Britain, and
other advanced countries, third-world countries do not have enough
advanced items to defend themselves. This movie was very upsetting
because it shows so many people getting taken advantage of.
Solomon, one of the main characters, would do anything to see his
family again. However, rebel forces and government soldiers are too
concerned with finding diamonds. This world has made money become the
item that everyone strives for in their lives. Money though, also turns
people against one another because they forget about what actually
matters in their lives. A more powerful country, such as Great Britain
being mentioned in the movie, are in great demand for diamonds. In a
class debate one day, a fact was mentioned about the two richest people
in the world. Those two people are worth more than many of the
third-world countries' economies of today. There are many rich
countries, and many poor countries, but the gap between the two groups
is getting thinner every day.
When Solomon kept the diamond, he had to go through much chaos to keep that diamond in his possession. Because the governments in third-world countries are not very strong, people are fighting in the streets all day long. For Danny Archer, it was just as hard because working for the rebels is a very hard business. He gets the rebel forces the weapons that they need, and chaos keeps going on. This again, is all to make a decent amount of money. It is a harsh reality to face sometimes because some people can turn their back on you instantly from trying to get money. Money cannot replace family, and Solomon shows that in the movie. Danny Archer shows that he will turn his back on a person who thinks that he is receiving help from him, when in reality he is just using him to get a diamond. Solomon just keeps the diamond to get back his family. If he had his family, it would be nice to have the diamond, but he would not risk losing them. Also in the class debate, we talked about how it is unfair that people in other parts of the world have to go through so much effort, when there are other people, such as in America, that are sitting at home doing nothing. Those type of people get money handed to them, and do not know what the meaning of hard work is. It is inhumane, and something should be done about it. The news and media are two pieces of society that do not help the situation. One thing that we have also discussed in class is that the news and media show a majority of negative occurrences that "matter" to the public. They disregard major problems that are going on in other countries. In my eyes, people are selfish when they see bad occurrences going on in other parts of the world, and they just sit there and do nothing because it does not directly affect them. A part that is dangerous with the news and media is that it can be internationally broadcasted. That means everyone in the world can see it. In the movie, Maddy Bowen, was a journalist researching the story of the Blood Diamond. Topics like these are dangerous because the people looking for them have very powerful people defending them. If more people try to go after something like the Blood Diamond, they would get really mad, and something bad might happen to you. The only way that Maddy Bowen would be able to show this story would be if she has live proof of the Blood Diamond. Even though it takes a lot of people to make things happen, it only takes one person to start that idea of making things happen. In class, we came to the conclusion that seeing is believing. You have to have evidence in today's world to actually prove a story to the world. Nobody will believe you if you do not have real proof. It takes an experience to show true values and importance in a person. Danny Archer, Solomon, and Maddy Bowen proved that in the movie. It is not about the money, but about the lives of millions of people. If just a couple of people put in the effort to help people in third-world countries, there would be a lot less chaos and sadness in the world.
