STORIES FROM THE CHAIR

Janice Koch

It has been a very dry, very hot summer here in New York. Even at this writing, the trees and grasses seem to ache for water as they struggle to remain green during the challenge of an extended and a serious drought. There is some relief in sight as a moisture laden weather front approaches. Autumn in the northeast promises to help nature renew itself and gain the strength to re-emerge after the winter.

In many ways our upcoming SIG conference has always signaled autumn’s relief to me. …Relief from pretense, and from the drought that pervades many academies — the absence of meaningful and purposeful discourse about difference, diversity, and social justice.

On behalf of Hofstra University’s Provost, Herman Berliner, and the Dean of the School of Education, James Johnson and Assistant Dean Jane Goldman, I extend a warm welcome to you to Hofstra University and Long Island as we celebrate the last SIG conference of this century from October 21 to October 23, 1999. At this time, we come to together to quench our thirst for the spirit of sisterhood that pervades the Annual Fall Conference addressing Research on Women and Education. At this time, Women Educators, our activist sister group and CRSW, the Committee on the Role and Status of Women of AERA collaborate as we plan ahead to the Annual AERA Conference in New Orleans in 2000.

Plan to attend the Fall Conference and share your own perspective on our conference theme, "Blurring Boundaries and Crossing Borders." As we put the program together, the range of presentations and the diversity of topics and formats overwhelm the Hofstra-based conference team. We think you will be enhanced by this conference and we are excited and honored to host it. We welcome our opening Keynote Speaker, Maxine Greene, our Friday night speaker, Charol Shakeshaft and the closing luncheon Saturday speaker, Marcia Gillespie, Editor-in-Chief of MS Magazine. Visit the MS web site at www.MSmagazine.com for Marcia’s most recent editorial!

Several SIG members have organized a "Croning" ceremony (see inside) and Friday night features one of Long Island’s favorite female DJs who will teach all those who are interested how to line dance. We will have informal "couch conversations"- opportunities to share ideas with experts in specific areas of research. Most importantly, our conference will help to re-charge your academic batteries so we can return, renewed, determined to go forward preparing educational professionals who share a commitment to all children and seek ways to level the playing field. I will see you in October, at the height of the fall foliage and at the end of the drought.

Some Important Announcements!

REGISTER EARLY FOR FALL RWE CONFERENCE!!!!

Please note that registering for the fall conference before Sept. 23, 1999 saves you money.

IMPORTANT: The special rate for a double room at the Long Island Marriott Hotel is $119 plus tax (a very good rate for the New York area). This rate cannot be guaranteed after September 23, 1999. Call 1-800-228-9290 for reservations.

If you have authored a book or can recommend a book for our SIG display at the fall conference please email Denise Capasso at the Hofstra University Book Store at BKSRAM@hofstra.edu

CELEBRATING OURSELVES

The first annual Croning Ceremony will be held at the RWE Conference immediately after the reception on Thursday evening, October 21, 1999. All those women who are fifty-six or older and have entered menopause are eligible to become crones. The ritual ceremony will be a celebration and recognition of our wise women, their contributions and accomplishments. Everyone at the Conference is invited to attend the ceremony and join in the celebration.

In order to ensure that we have enough artifacts necessary for the ceremony, all those who wish to become crones must notify either Mary Scherr (scherr@acusd.edu) or

Barbara Krysiak (bkrysiak@hopper.unh.edu) on or before Friday, September 17, 1999. If you have any questions, please e-mail either Mary or Barbara.
