Duty 9: Conduct Pre-Shift Examination (for the next shift)

Learner will demonstrate how to conduct a proper and thorough pre-shift examination.

The learner will explain the job steps listed, why they are conducted, any associated risk, and how to implement appropriate controls.

1. Examine the section tail piece
   • Check for proper air movement
   • See vent plan (Ventilation)
   • Check spillage at wipers, tail rollers, feeder area (General housekeeping, possibly dust control)
   • Check guarding at tail rollers, feeder locations, motors (Guarding)
   • Check for oil, grease, coal fires (General housekeeping)
   • Check adequate walkways at both sides of feeder (General housekeeping)
   • Ensure feeder cable hung and guarded
   • Check whether belt is wet or not (Dust control)
   • Check fire outlet and proper location (Fire hazards)
   • Check fire hose (if applicable) (Fire hazards)
   • Check visual pager (if applicable)
   • Be aware of unusual odors or sounds (Fire hazards)
   • Check for methane (Ventilation/Gas detection)
   • Check roof/ribs (Roof/rib control)
   • Check for damaged bolts, wide bolts and roof scaling (Roof/rib control)
   • Loose draw rock and/or ribs must be supported or taken down (Roof/rib control)
   • Check water sprays (if applicable) (Dust control)
   • Check crusher bits (if applicable) (Roof/rib control)
2. Examine haulway
• Check roof/ribs (Roof/rib control)
• Pull draw rock if necessary (Roof/rib control)
• Support or take down (Roof/rib control)
• Check for wide places (Roof/rib control)
• Corners (Roof/rib control)
• Must be recorded in the pre-shift book with corrective action taken (Record keeping)
• Roof and ribs for adequate rock dust (Dust control)
• Check for damaged bolts, wide bolts and roof scaling (Roof/rib control)
• Loose draw rock and/or ribs must be supported or taken down (Roof/rib control)
• Check for spillage (General housekeeping/dust control)
• Check for air flow (Ventilation)
• Curtains (Ventilation)
• Fly pad (Ventilation)
• Check dust suppression (Dust control)
• Check for obstructions (General housekeeping)
• Slipping/tripping hazards (General housekeeping)
3. Conduct dust parameter examination (Dust control)
• Scrubber pressure readings (Dust control/Ventilation)
• See water pressure (Dust control/Ventilation)
• Check operating sprays (Dust control/Ventilation)
• Check roof bolter vacuum (Dust control)
• Record the exam (Record keeping)
• Sign the dust parameter board (Record keeping)
4. Examine battery charging station
   • Check for proper venting to the retun (Ventilation)
   • Take gas test (Ventilation/Gas detection)
   • Check for unusual odors (Fire hazards)
   • Check for fire protection (Fire hazards)
   • Fire extinguisher/rock dust (Fire hazards)
   • Check that ground clamp is properly attached
5. Examine faces and immediate returns
   • Check roof/ribs (Roof/rib control)
   • Check for adequate rock dust (Dust control)
   • Check methane, oxygen deficiency (face and return) (Ventilation)
   • Check air readings in the last open line (Ventilation)
   • Check line curtains (Ventilation)
   • Check next to the last bolt reflective materials (Roof/rib control)
   • Check test holes at each intersection (Ventilation)
   • Enter date, time, initials (Record keeping)
   • Examine back-up curtains (General housekeeping/dust control)
   • Check for excessive spillage from last open crosscut inby (General housekeeping)
   • Check for obstructions (General housekeeping)
   • Slipping and tripping hazards (General housekeeping)
6. Monitor roof control requirements (Roof/rib control)
   • Entry widths, intersection widths (Roof/rib control)
7. Examine power center
   • Conduct gas test (Ventilation)
   • Check firefighting equipment at power center (Fire hazards)
   • Ensure electrical mats in place
   • Ensure top of power center is clear of combustible materials (General housekeeping)
   • Check fire protection (Fire hazards)
   • 5 bags of rock dust
   • 20 lb ABC fire extinguisher
   • Check communications
   • Check housekeeping around power center (General housekeeping)
   • Properly rock dusted (Dust control)
   • Keep garbage picked up (General housekeeping)
   • Check for unusual odors, noise, etc. (Fire hazards)
   • Check required signs
   • Danger High Voltage
   • Phone (if applicable)
   • First aid supplies
   • Escapeway Map (Non-routine emergency procedures)
8. Call results out to the oncoming shift (Record keeping)
