Background:

Integrated Curriculum Project with Kaho’olawe Surveyor

The Kaho`olawe Surveyor is a curriculum supplement; it is not designed to accompany any specific curriculum. It can be used to introduce a variety of subjects, such as history, archaeology, geography, biology, ecology, and more. Teachers are encouraged to create and share materials that they develop, or to obtain additional material from the U.S. Navy, the Protect Kaho`olawe `Ohana, the Nature Conservancy, and other organizations involved with the restoration of Kaho`olawe Island. You may find their addresses in the "Resources" section in the text versons on the CD-ROM. Please share your experiences with us, and let us know how you have used the Kaho`olawe Surveyor in the classroom.

The Kaho`olawe Surveyor CD-ROM is a proof-of-concept multimedia science tool intended for use by the general public, especially students and teachers in grades five through twelve. It is designed to use georeferenced data to facilitate an understanding of some of the history, physical processes, and remediation requirements needed to prepare the island for its ultimate use by the people of Hawaii. The Kaho`olawe Surveyor is designed to allow teachers and students to explore the possibilities that lie ahead for the island, given geographic, cultural, ecological, and safety concerns. The graphical user interface of this CD-ROM is intended to allow the user to explore the island's natural and human-related features visually. Accordingly, a minimum of text appears on each screen, with supplementary text available for those who want to explore further.
