Tips for the Table Topics Master

To Prepare for the Meeting

Prepare you topics - they may be:
Questions to ask
Quotes to make comments on
Physical Items (a bag of "toys") to speak on
Be creative, but make the questions or topics ideas that everyone can be able to relate to
Prepare at least 3-5 questions, be flexible with the number of questions to ask so that the meeting can remain on time
Ask the Toastmaster when s/he plans to have you on the agenda (when the meeting is quite full, the Toastmaster may put Table Topics at the end of the meeting instead of the beginning)

During the Meeting

Ask any guests before the meeting begins, if they would like to participate in Table Topics.
When you are introduced by the Toastmaster, explain the purpose and "rules" of Table Topics:
time limit
speaking "off the cuff"
The general practice is to ask the questions first - and then call on a person to respond.
When you call on your first "victim", s/he should be a member - not a guest. This is so that the guests may observe someone familiar with the process go first.
Limit your choices to those who are not giving a speech that evening - everyone else is pretty much fair game.
