With each new day, new changes are made. Changes to the way our lives run. Changes of what we know. Changes of how we do things. One of these things that we as Americans have seen to change is the status of the black man. These days have changed to allow Negroes the right to work and earn a living and we as citizens may not get in the way of that. However we will not lay ourselves on the ground for them to walk all over us. I speak of the proposed bill to allow former slaves to receive the land they used to work on. For the Union to propose such a bill is an insult to all us landowners. Our lands have gone through our families for generations cannot be taken away and given to those who do not deserve it. Our properties are too important to be given away. They have much value in them, not only in monetary, but in symbolic tradition. The land we live and work on is the gratification of our hard labor of our past. Would the great Nathaniel Bedford Forrest allow Blacks to take over his home? Of course not. We must stand up for such actions. We must believe in the Black Code. For I will vote against this bill to pass.
