Abstract

Mauritius is a sub-Sahara African island country about 2000 sq.km in size, and is located about 2000 km as well off the cost of south east of Africa.  The first European to live in Mauritius was the Dutch in the 17th century who left it years later. A little after the departure of the Dutch, the French colonized it, but lost it to the British a century later. The British controlled the island until its independence in 1968. The four different ethnic groups that make up the society of the small nation were brought in by both the British and the French.

Mauritius was left with a sugar-based economy at its independence from Britain. With a stable democracy and strong government institutions, Mauritius was able to expand and diversify its economy into many industries including the Information and Communication Technology industry. Today, Mauritius’s economy is the second most competitive economy and its people are the highest income earners in the entire sub-Saharan African continent.

The government of Mauritius being aware of the impact of ICT in its economy is investing human and material resources to make its country the first computer hardware manufacturer and supplier for the sub-Saharan African market.
