General Ecology

Course Objectives

This course is one of the six courses comprising the Biology Department's core curriculum. General Ecology fulfills the Biology Department's writing-intensive requirement. 

The goals of this course, in addition to gaining an understanding of the discipline of ecology, include developing and improving your skills in scientific writing, basic mathematics, statistics, and in the use of computer spreadsheets. 

Students will: 

1.       Develop an appreciation of the modern scope of scientific inquiry in the field of Ecology.  

2.       Become familiar with the variety of ways that organisms interact with both the physical and the biological environment. 

3.       Develop an understanding of the differences in the structure and function of different types of ecosystems. 

4.       Learn techniques of data analysis as well as methods of presenting scientific information in figures and tables. 

5.       Develop an appreciation of the natural world through direct experience with local ecosystems. 

6.       Learn techniques for gathering data in the field. 

7.       Become proficient in writing a scientific paper in the format of the journal, Ecology.
