Engl 101 and Gov 101
Paper comparing President Hammond in Gabriel and a recent American President

Draft due Mon Oct 17th and final version due on Wed Oct 19th.

Compare the President in Gabriel Over the White House to a recent--or not so recent--American President.  We have had a query from one student about whether he could write on Lincoln and we thought that would open up the assignment in interesting ways if you already have some knowledge of the subject.  We are construing recent very broadly.  For the revised version due Wed, the preferred citation format is MLA but you can use whatever format you are comfortable with (MLA, APA, or Chicago) as long as you are consistent.  You can check the sample papers in Hacker to make sure you are following the guidelines.

Dr. Taylor and I are having you write your paper in class for two reasons.  First, we don't want you to have to work on the paper afterwards when you have other papers and exams due this week.  And second, since so much of the writing you will do in college--and in the workplace--will be done under time constraints, we thought it would be a good experience to limit the time you had to work on the paper.  You will have a chance to revise your paper for for both classes on Wed Oct 19th and for Engl 101 again on Nov 3rd.

Don’t worry about the length of your draft. There are advantages in learning how to write under pressure but we are not expecting you all to write four pages (polished or otherwise) on Mon. Write however much you can and do an outline first of the points you plan to cover. And don’t worry on Mon as much about grammar and style; you can revise Wed; focus on your ideas and the readability of your prose. And do an outline. One other point: it would probably be easier to write quickly if you compare Gabriel to a recent President since you will already know something about the subject. Only write about a President from the more distant past (like Lincoln) if you already know about his career.

Dr. Taylor would prefer that you print your draft (probably in on of the Innovation Hall labs) and get it to her by 3pm on Mon but if you must submit it online because of computer problems, you can publish it on the Gov 101 blog at georgemasongovt101@blogspot.com

Here is what Dr. Taylor put on the blog for this submission:

Gabriel Over the White House:

If you must submit your paper on-line, please reply to this blog.
All papers are due Monday, by 3:00 p.m.

The final version you are handing in to both Gov 101 and Engl 101 on Wed must be typed, no more than 4 pages, double spaced, normal (1" or so) margins with size 12 font, at least 3 references in the text, a works cited page. Dr. Taylor would prefer the paper to be in MLA format.  Remember to write an outline before class on Mon and then start by filling in and developing your points. If you don’t finish the paper on Mon, don't worry.  You will be revising and extending the paper on Wed and in Engl 101 will have the chance to further revise the paper for Nov 3rd.
