Current Issues Project

Fall 2002 - Instructor: Dr. Largen

The last two lab classes of the semester will be devoted to student presentations on current environmental issues. Each student will select and research a current environmental issue of his/her choice. The student will prepare an oral presentation (~8 min in length followed by up to 4 minutes for questions) of his/her findings to deliver on one of the last two lab meetings. The student will support his/her oral presentation with either a Powerpoint presentation or a poster. Volunteers will be solicited to make presentations on the first of the last two lab meetings. All students are required to attend both of the final two lab meetings. Each student will complete a summary sheet (to be distributed in lab) of all student presentations delivered on both days. The presentation and supporting Powerpoint presentation or poster must include the following:

This project is not meant to be a major research project. You are encouraged to consult the mainstream media (newspapers, news magazines) and internet sites. The primary goal of this project is to give students the opportunity to gain information and perspective about an environmental issue of interest to them and share that information with their instructor and classmates. The secondary goal is to give students practice in presenting information orally and visually.

This project accounts for 10 points (out of a total of 100 points) of the lab grade (7.5 points for presentation and visual support, 2.5 points for summary of classmates' presentations.
