Statistical tests of significance, p-values, SPSS output… nothing like a good old-fashioned mathematics statistics course! I was familiar with the topics from previous courses, but I also realized that I was beginning to emerge myself in the world of statistics. I felt that it was important to be able to identify and appropriately use the various statistical tests that exist, as well as interpret research results for logic and vailidity. Additionally, I was actually looking forward to learning how to use SPSS, which could benefit me in my current position as an analyst because I would have the expertise to perform certain data analyses that are typically conducted by data analysts and statisticians within the organization. Thus far in the course, I have not had to produce any assignments. However, in formulating my topic for the final project, I am more conscious of how I can use quantitative research methods to study student achievement issues, when and how to use the various statistical tests, and how I apply what I’ve learned about research methods to interpret existing research findings.
