Dr. Flinn's teaching and research interests include the neuronal bases of learning and memory. She has studied the effects of malnutrition on learning and memory in infants and invertebrates. She is currently examining the role of metals, particularly zinc, in the brain. The following figures show the levels of zinc and iron in the rat hippocampus. These sections were obtained using synchrotron x-ray flourescence at the Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Dr. Flinn is also interested in the role of seratonin and its metabolites in alcoholism.
Much of her current research is done in association with the Shared Research Instrumentation Facility (SRIF), located at George Mason's Prince William Copunty campus. The facility is equipped with instrumentation for the measurement of neurotransmitter levels, and a gene array system is currently being installed.
Dr. Flinn's work has appeared in the following publications: Perceptual and Motor Skills, J. Physiological Psychology, Invertebrate Neuroscience, Comp. Biochem. Physiol, and Metal Ions in Biology and Medicine; she has presented regularly at the Society for Neuroscience Annual meetings.
