Al-Jazari

Date of Birth: 1136

Date of Death: 1206

Al-Jazari made significant contributions to the field of Computer Science; specifically mechanical computing.

Al-Jazari was born in Turkey in which he served as a chief engineer at the Artuqid Palace. During his time here, he was able to develop many mechanical devices, with many of them being notated in his book, The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices. This work detailed over 50 of Al-Jazari's mechanical inventions, providing explainations, as well as illustrations. Many of these designs can be said to be ahead of their time, which influenced the fields of automation and mechanical design.

One of Al-Jazari's most famous invention is the Elephant Clock. This piece was water-powered, and it not only used mechanics, but also used cultural symbolism; he incorporated an Indian elephant, an Egyptian phoenix, all while using Greek-inspired water mechanisms. This clock was able to demonstrate Al-Jazari's advanced knowledge of automation, as well as his understanding of mechanical processes and engineering principles. Not only did the Elephant Clock serve as a timekeeper, but also a symbol of unity through different cultures; this was all done through the engineering.

Al-Jazari's inventions can be said to have provided the groundwork of mechanical engineering. They have influenced the creation and growth of robotics, as well as automated systems. His influence in this space can be seen in the works of other scientists, most notably Leonardo da Vinci.
