He is most notable for creating the first operational programmable computer, the Turing-complete Z3, in May of 1941. He is most notable for creating the first operational programmable computer, the Z3, in May of 1941. Konrad was born in Berlin and would eventually attend the Technical University of Berlin, where he pursued a degree in civil engineering.

After working for the Ford Company, he would design the Z1, a binary calculator, in his parents apartment. The Z1 did not work well because of the lack of precision. The original blueprints were destroyed during a British air raid during World War 2. After being called into military service in 1939, he would gain the resources to build the Z2. He would then build the S1 and S2 computing machines, that were used to guide, radio-controlled bombs.
