Overview

This paper explores how the use of renewable energy, mainly solar energy, can be use to aid Mauritania to enter the global economy by developing more efficient energy infrastructure. With a sound energy infrastructure, Mauritania could begin to implement the ICT “Desert PC” as a means to alleviate the region’s impoverished through widespread microfinancing. Microfinancing has been successful in many regions with the poor (mainly women) living in abject poverty, where it has exceedingly created small businesses and businesswomen. By using PV solar technology to power the “Desert PC,” thousands in Mauritania (especially the majority who live in the Sahara Desert) could potentially have access to internet connection, and thereby access to microfinancing. With access to microfinancing, the impoverished can slowly pull themselves out of poverty, while the loans that they pay back can finance more loan generation so that others may follow the same trajectory.
