The use of information communications technology (ICT) has been very beneficial throughout Africa. Rochlin (1995) states NICT (new information communications technology) refers to all major computerized systems for telecommunications data management and public or private control, aimed at both the industry and the individual (as cited in ChéNeau-Loquay, A., 2000, p.219). Technologies such as the radio, internet, and cell phone telephony have been monumental in the development of public infrastructures in various African countries. This research paper will investigate Mauritania as a case study; it will attempt to discover how the use of ICT will help the country’s economy emerge further. First, I will introduce the country’s brief historical and current geographical, political, economic, and demographic data. Second, I will discuss how the use of solar power could be utilized by Mauritania for economic and energy infrastructure development. Third, a brief overview of Mauritania’s internet infrastructure will be observed. Finally, the implementation of how solar power could advance Mauritanian microfinancing, will be covered. It is necessary to cover the aforementioned parts to ensure maximum comprehension of how solar technology could influence economic development.
