This study tour will provide students with insights and understanding
about the different meanings and forms of expression of "nation"
and "nationalism." Students will learn about the separate
but interwoven histories of disparate nationalities in Central
Europe and about their present distribution, features and the
relationships among them. Through lectures, interviews, travel
and site visits, students will learn about efforts to and prospects
for the emergence of a new and expanding European national identity.
This history of the region we focus on is one of tumultuous relationships
between nations and national groups. The Holy Roman Empire, the
Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the recent Soviet Empire all dissolved
as a consequence of forces arising in this region. Likewise, the
success of efforts to expand the European Union or Community hinges
on national and nationalistic aspirations, choices and actions
in the coming months and years. The limitations on and possibilities
of reinventing or rearranging their outlooks is a key to what
Europe will look like in generations to come.
