Implicit & Explicit Course Agreements

Every university course involves a series of agreements made by the student, the professor, and the university – whether implicit or explicit. I prefer to make these commitments explicit, so there is no misunderstanding about them and so each of us is aware of any failure to keep them. I do this by providing you with a list – and asking you to formally commit to them. A list of my commitments to my students is also available.

I will also describe in class the process we will use whenever someone (you or me) fails to honor any particular commitment – that process is essentially staying in communication. These commitments are listed below and will be provided to you in class at the beginning of the semester.

  1. I will do all the assigned work for this course. I will do as much work as it takes for my team to succeed.
  2. I will come to every scheduled class (except as noted below).

  1. I will be in my seat, ready to begin, whenever class is scheduled to start or re-start.
  2. I will be truly “present” in class at all times – alert, listening actively, and participating fully.
  3. I will speak out and generate discussion, and I will speak up and be frank – with Dr. Finn, my TA, and with my teammates.
  4. I will take personal responsibility for my situation, even when unforeseen events occur.
  5. I will adhere to the GMU Code of Conduct.
  6. I will stay in communication - as soon as I am aware that some other commitment in my life will interfere (or is interfering) with one of these course commitments, I will communicate this to my TA and my teammates.
