Please e-mail me your preferred topic ASAP. I will let you know if it's "taken." (so far almost all the topics are still open)

To: comm435 Class
Hi people,
1) Selecting C2 Topics
If you've downloaded the C2 assignment from my web site, you know that you must
choose your topic from among those listed - and have it approved by me. You
also know that the primary criterion is that each topic can only be used 3 times
- and it's a first-come, first-served arrangement. So, as soon as you pick your
topic, send me an e-mail letting me know. I will bring a list to class this
week of who has chosen what so far.
2) Alternate Research Paper Assignment
This assignment is only for those students who are NOT doing a web site this
semester. The alternate assignment is posted on my web site.
See you Wednesday. (Don't forget your Yahoo participation.)

Subject: comm435: Yahoo Groups, bonus info re: spyware, buying URLs
To: comm435 Class
Hi all,
a couple things -
anybody use Google today? Click on the attached jpeg to see their what they've
done to their 'trademark' logo today!
1) Info about Using Yahoo! Groups
Several people have had difficulty suing Yahoo! Groups. Let me run down the
issues. (BTW, did you notice that while they can't own the english word 'yahoo,'
they've customized it and made it their trademark by adding an exclamation point?)
Problem #1 - my invite expired. Most of you ahve e-mailed me and I've reissued the invitation.
Problem #2 - I can't seem to gain access, even after I've created a Yahoo! ID. This one has me stumped. If you are one of the 2 or 3 people with this problem, keep calling me until we sort it out.
Problem #3 - I (though I) posted a message, but it isn't there. (Please note this one - this could happen to any of you! ) I suspect what has happened is that after you typed your message, you clicked on the "post" command in the left side menu - which erases what you typed and re-opens the new message window. To post your message, you must scroll down and click on "Send."
This brings me to a general suggestion for ALL discussion board posts: you should first create every message in another editor (e.g., Word). Not only can you then spell check it more easily, but you won't 'lose' the message before you post it.
2) New Topics are up on Yahoo!
So be fruitful and multiply messages.
3) Bonus info - Cleaning up your PC
This info has nothing to do with the requirements for comm435 - but you may
find it useful.
Packages every PC should have:
a) Anti-virus software. (You are entitled to GMU's site licence version of Norton
Corporate A-V, with automatic virus definitions updates. Go to: http://itusupport.gmu.edu/downloads/index.asp
to get your free copy.)
b) A software firewall. (I use Norton Internet Security, very cheap if you find
it bundled with others useful Norton products, such as Systemworks, which I
love. Or, download ZoneAlarm for free at http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp
). Ignore their offer for (a paid version of) PestPatrol - there's a free package
to remove adware, spyware, and malware.
c) Anti-adware package. Have you had problems with weird programs on your PC
after using Kaaza or another music download package? Then download Adaware 6.0
at: http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button
. Simple to install and use, you can trust it - anything it finds, you should
highlight/check and delete it.
3) Bonus info - Buying Your Own URL
This info has nothing to do with the requirements for comm435 - but you may
find it useful.
If you or anyone you know wants to put up a web site outside of GMU, it's sometimes hard to know how to get started. In class this week I spoke about my non-GMU URLs. After class I shared some the following info with Andrew McIntyre and someone else in the class asked for it too. So here it is for all.
If you're willing to pay for web hosting, and you'd like your own URL (e.g., I own "andyfinn.us," "andyfinn.org," and others), which also allows you to use your name in your e-mail ID (I use andy@andyfinn.us - and I can create 100s others if I like), then there are two basic steps:
Step 1 - find out if the URL you want is available. You can do this at lots
of sites, but try this one:
http://www.whois-register.com/
b/c you can also BUY that URL there as well - for only $8.45 per year (2 years
required).
If the URL you want is taken, you can look up who has it and when it expires
at:
http://www.whois.sc/
Step 2 - select a web hosting company.
You want a stable company that will be around for the length of your contract,
so shop carefully.
Here's a clearinghouse for (selected) web hosting companies:
http://www.allcheaphosting.com/
I went with:
http://www.powweb.com/
They charge $7.77 per month for 1000 Mb of storage, and allow 5 Gb of downloading
bandwidth per day (that's a LOT, and a great deal!).
Hope all this helps.

I hope you've had a great spring break. I also hope you've kept up with your courses some - esp. this one! There is a lot to do to hit the ground running for the second half of the semester.
I won't go through all the deliverables, but there is new reading AND written assignments due very soon.
Re: online participation -
- some folks are making great comments and helping to build an interesting discussion
- but it works better when everyone participates
- keep in mind, for future weeks, that participation just before class is actually
worth less to the class (and therefore in your point total), b/c few people
will benefit from it at that point

Subject: comm435: next week, Netscape, Townhall, ISP Directory
To: comm435 Class
Hi all,
a couple things -
1) Class on 2/24
Next week our class will meet:
- 4:30-5:15 - regular room, AQ 103
- 5:30-7:10 - JC 311b
Who should/must attend the training session next week in the Johnson Center
lab?
EVERYONE. If you have elected to NOT do a web page this semester, on 2/24 you
will serve as a 'consultant.' One instructor cannot possibly provide the "walk-around
help" required to keep everyone up to speed and keep the class progressing
through the material. So, ignore what I said about not being required to attend
this session if you were not doing a web page. Everyone should be there next
week!
Our instructor will be top of the line - Charlotte Rinderknecht, Production Manager, for STAR*T Sup/Mason Media Lab (if you attend one of the other scheduled STAR sessions on Web page mgmt, you will be taught by one of Charlotte's capable staff - but we get the boss!).
2) Netscape 7.1
As mentioned in class, those that have not yet downloaded Netscape 7.1 should
get on it this week. You can/will be using Netscape for:
- Netscape Composer (web design) - you'll be using this in class on 2/24
- Netscape Messenger (e-mail desktop client)
Note: this exercise is NOT about getting a new e-mail ID (zzzz@netscape.com), but using the Netscape ("Mail and Newsgroups") desktop e-mail interface to download your GMU e-mail to your desktop.
Again, go to http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/download.jsp to download,
then install it.
Install your e-mail client soon (Netscape or another), b/c it's 5 points a week
for 10 weeks. This is your LAST week to get full credit. If you have any problems,
call the ITU helpline at 993-8870. Remember to post a message on Townhall as
soon as you install Netscape as your desktop e-mail client, AND start rec'ving
msgs.
3) Townhall
I've posted new discussion threads on Townhall, including:
- Discussion list netiquette
- A rape in cyberspace
- Help with Netscape logistics
- Tracking Your progress with the Technology Use assignments

Hi all,
This message is entirely about Townhall. We WILL switch to Townhall this week (starting now). (The only reason to use WebCT this week is if you would like to add to the existing conversations there.)
How to use Townhall:
- new to Townhall? - read the attached document to create your ID in Townhall
- already have an ID in Townhall? - log in at townhall.gmu.edu, and enter your
ID (same as your WebCT ID) and your password (if you can't remember, click on
Lost Password and follow the directions)
Notes about Townhall:
- I'm going to put discussion points up on Townhall over the next couple hours
- I will split the class in half, so only add comments to the half you fall
in - see the first message on Townhall
- ignore the Blog and Wiki for now - though you are free to "play"
on them with me. In a week or two I will ask yuo to contribute there (for points).
For now, it's just practice on the Townhall web log and wiki
See you on Townhall!

Subject: comm435: democracy in action!
To: comm435 Class
Hi all,
As you may know, John Kerry will appear in the JC Atrium Tuesday evening sometime
after 7:00 - the close of the VA primary. I will let class out a bit early (approx.
7:00). But the main purpose of this message is to encourage you to take the
time to attend!
This rally is voluntary - but strongly encouraged - for comm 435 students. This is close to a 'once in a lifetime' event on campus - a major party candidate - the presumptive nominee - appearing at GMU, during our class time!
Details on the rally:
- the event starts at 7:00
- the polls close at 7:00
- no telling when Kerry will appear, but I bet it's before 8
- We'll get out about 7:00
- to avoid the crowds, consider entering from the WGMU, or "Braddock end"
of the JC, and going up the stairs at that end - avoid the bookstore end
- I will be attempting to stake out a place on the second floor, in the center
section near the stairs facing the bookstore (the stage will be in front of
the bookstore)
- it will be packed by 7:30! Good luck!
If you're not a Democrat, or if you don't care about politics -
- those of you who already know you would NEVER vote for Kerry - or even a Dem
- please come also
- this is not about supporting Kerry
- it's about witnessing the event of the year at GMU
- it's about witnessing the great political process we are privileged to have
in the USA
- I was at a Nixon rally in 68, and a Carter rally in 76
- if this was a Republican rally, I'd also give up class time for it
- think of it as a chance to witness the democratic process in action!
See you at class at 4:30. USA! USA! USA!

Subject: comm435: e-mail desktop client
To: COMM 435 Class List
Hi folks,
Here's how to download and install an e-mail desktop client.
1. You can use any software you like on your desktop. Three that are free include:
Netscape Messenger, Eudora (my personal favorite) or Microsoft Outlook or Outlook
Express.
I recommend you consider Netscape, because:
- GMU's ITU officially supports Netscape Messenger, though they will be quite
helpful with the others as well (Helpline is 993-8870)
- Netscape 7.1 not only comes with Messenger, but also Netscape Composer (a
free web design package)
2. Downloading
- whatever package you download, save the file to a location you will remember
Netscape Messenger
- you can get Netscape 7.1 at: http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/download.jsp
- note that Netscape 7.1 has replaced the old "Netscape Communicator"
product, and contains all the old free applications - Messenger (for e-mail),
Composer (for web design), Instant Messenger (IM), and Navigator (for web browsing).
Eudora
- you can download Eudora 6.0 at: www.eudora.com
Microsoft Outlook
- Outlook Express comes free and installed within Internet Explorer (the MS
browser)
3. Installation
Installation
- whatever package you downloaded, go to where it's located and double click
on the setup/install file
4. Set-up
- Netscape 7.1 will put an icon on your desktop for Mail and Newsgroups - this
is your e-mail application
- you can also reach it by opening Netscape Navigator (the browser) and clicking
on Windows (you'll see all the Netscape apps there), then Mail and Newsgroups
- whatever package you downloaded, you just follow the directions
- when asked for the "Incoming Mail Server," type: mail.gmu.edu
- you will need to know the "Outgoing Mail Server," also known as
the SMTP Server. Your ISP is the only one who has this info - call them for
it ahead of time. (E.g., if you're in the GMU dorms, GMU is your ISP, and you
are using the GMU network to UPLOAD you e-mails, so you would type: "smtp.gmu.edu"
If you have a Cox Cable Modem, Cox is your ISP, and so Outgoing mail is UPLOADED
through Cox's SMTP server - so type in "smtp-server" If you have a
different ISP, call them to get the name of the "Outgoing Mail Server.")
Other helpful hints:
- I recommend you choose a POP3 implementation (rather than IMAP) - it downloads
all e-mail & attachments to your computer, while IMAP can take a while to
open things up (b/c you're managing e-mails on the server, not on your PC)
- but if you do choose POP3, you should also choose "Leave Mail on Server"
(7 days is probably enough). This will allow you to look at your mail on your
home PC, or if you like, look at the same mail from a web browser (at mail.gmu.edu),
just like you can today.

Hi folks,
A reminder -
The WebCT discussions for week2 are worth up to 25 points per person, and are more than half over (they run from Tuesday at 4:30 to the following Tuesday; the halfway point in the week is some time about early Saturday mornings).
One goal for the entire class (led by Natilia & John this week) is to come up with a prioritized list of e-mail netiquette rules (i.e., rules unique to e-mail communication). So it's not enough to simply contribute your suggestion. Each student has a responsibility to respond to other suggestions, and help drive the group to some consensus about most important rules. (There are other discussion topics online this week, too.)
Also keep in mind:
- next week we'll do IM rules
- the discussion board rules
- then listserv rules
- then, finally, general rules that apply to all e-text
So, any rule that applies to multiple forms of e-text CANNOT, by definition,
be an e-mail rule. It's ok st start a list of general rules, but we'll save
them for a few weeks from now.
