Directions for Posting PowerPoint Slides on Your Web Site
It
is relatively simple to produce easy-to-use output from PowerPoint to display
a presentation on your web site. Here are the steps:
- Be
sure to use PowerPoint 2000 (it is much more user-friendly)
- Earlier
versions of Powerpoint will create files for the web, but do not display as easily
or professionally as with 2000
- Go
to a computer lab at school if you do not have Powerpoint 2000
- Give
your existing PPT file a short, simple name (as all html files should have)
- It
is easiest if you place your existing PPT file a directory within your structure
of HTML files (on your local machine)
- If
you do not yet have a structure complex enough to require directories, you will
when you finish (Powerpoint generates dozens of files during the process below)
- For
example, you could simply create a directory titled "Presentations,"
and move your PPT file in there now
- Within
PowerPoint 2000, click on File, then Save as Web Page
- Check
within the dialog box to make sure the Page Title is appropriate, then
click Save
- Powerpoint
will take a few seconds, and will create an HTML file and a directory (if your
PPT file was named spam.ppt, you now have the original file, and HTML file
named spam, and a directory named spam_files with all the files
needed to display
- Go
to the HTML page where you wish to place the link to your web-based PowerPoint
presentation and type in the words you want (e.g., "Spam presentation in
PowerPoint"), then create a link to the HTML file spam.html
- See my Comm
250 Week 8 Lecture for an example of how it should look)
- See my complete list
of all the Comm 250 Lectures
for an idea about a format for displaying a series of assignments or presentations
- You
can move your files to another location, but be sure to keep the spam.html file
and the spam_files directory together under the same directory
- Put
a disclaimer near your links that "These Powerpoint presentations are optimized
for Internet Explorer and may not display (well) in Netscape or another browser."
- That's
all there is to it.

the ITU hotline (993-8770) if you have difficulty. Call me if they are closed.
